Senator Franklin Drilon and DPWH Region 6, together with local executive leaders – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, VM Joe III Espinosa, and Congressman Jerry Trenas, launched another high impact project – the improvement and widening of Benigno Aquino Avenue or commonly called as the Diversion Road. This project is touted by the Ilonggo senator as another catalyst in Iloilo City’s bid to host the ministerial meeting of APEC in 2015.

Envisioned as another first in the country, the project aims to convert the length of Diversion Road from General Luna Street to El 98 Street as an extension of the widely acclaimed Iloilo River Esplanade. This project together with the new Esplanade 2 and the widening of R. Mapa Street will create a triangular business area which includes the Kapideco (Ayala Project) Estates, SM Properties, and the Megaworld Iloilo Business Park.

Underground provisions for public utilities such as electricity, water, telephone lines will also be provided, thus finally removing the spaghetti wires along the stretch of Diversion Road. The project will also include additional 3 pedestrian overpasses, a footbridge across Dungon Creek, jogging and biking lanes, and a beautiful landscape.

The project will cost Php 300 Million and is expected to be finished by December 2013. The project is conceptualized by renowned Filipino architect Paulo Alcazaren, who also designed the Iloilo Esplanade and Singapore’s Clarke Quay.
