Iloilo City’s Development Projects Update (December 2011)

Before 2011 ends let’s take a look at on-going and future projects on Iloilo City. 2012 will be an exciting year for the city as some of this projects are slated for completion, while others are to be started after a long wait. Here are some of the projects expected to change the Metro Iloilo’s cityscape:

Iloilo River Esplanade Project

Iloilo City government started last December 5 the beautification of the Trenas Boulevard, dubbed as the “Iloilo River Esplanade”. The long stretch of the boulevard is said to be closed for at least six months with heavy equipment now deployed at the area. Projected completion of the Esplanade is on mid-2012. Initial plans include a view deck, palm trees, lamp posts, food kiosks and a giant Dagoy statue, depicting the city’s famous Dinagyang Festival. It will enhance the Trenas Boulevard’s atmosphere as a recreational facility and as an emerging tourist destination of the city.

Renowned architect Paulo Alcazaren, the developer of the popular Singapore Quay, was tasked to draw the design for the Iloilo River Esplanade. Estimated cost of the project:  P38 million.

Iloilo City Community College Building

The four-storey green building at Molo district which will serve as the campus of Iloilo City Community College is nearly complete. With construction of the building shouldered by Mang Inasal founder, Injap Sia, the City College will accommodate scholars that will be subsidized by the city government. Expected opening of the college will be on June 2012, offering associate degree courses such as Associate in Travel Management and Associate in Office Administration.

Medicus Medical Center

Aiming to be Iloilo’s most modern and state of the art medical facility, Medicus Philippines Inc., started the construction of the Medicus Medical Center at Mandurriao District last June 2011. To be constructed side by side with its existing Health Partners Condo-Clinics, the medical center will be composed of two interconnected structures – a 1o-storey and a 6-storey high building. Aside from augmenting the total hospital bed capacity of Iloilo City, it is also expected to boost the metro’s potential as medical tourism destination.

Injap Tower Condotel

Dubbed as Iloilo’s future tallest skyscraper, Injap Land’s Injap Tower Condotel will be a 21-storey mixed-use structure featuring residential condominiums and commercial space lease. Located at West Diversion Road in front of SM City Mandurriao, it is greatly accessible to schools, shopping malls, and hospitals. It is also 20-minutes from Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan. Construction started last November 2011 and estimated turn over date on December 2013.

The Uptown Place

A mixed residential condominium and retail commercial strip, The Uptown Place is to be located at General Luna Street right in front of the grand Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center.

The location of the project provides great accessibility to schools, hospitals, and shopping malls, and at the same time a good view of the Iloilo River. It will be a four-storey structure, with 177 semi-furnished units with balconies and complete amenities. The ground floor will be open for lease for interested commercial establishments.

Construction has not yet started. Estimated Completion date: December 11, 2013.

Guimaras-Iloilo Ferry Terminal (GIFT)

To better serve the transportation of goods and passengers between the island of Guimaras and Iloilo City, the city government proposed the construction of a modern transit hub, dubbed as Guimaras-Iloilo Ferry Terminal (GIFT), at the site of the old Rotary Park located at Fort San Pedro. Alongside this project is the upgrading of the ferry ports at Buenavista and Jordan in Guimaras.

Construction expected to start by mid-2012. Bidding still to be held by the government.

New Iloilo City Hall

The new Iloilo City Hall is nearly complete and partially operational as six city government departments transferred at the structure this December. Slated for inauguration during Dinagyang 2012 festivities, it will reflect the major urban facelift the Iloilo is undergoing.
