Iloilo to host the International Youth Day
This August, Iloilo City is set to host the first International Youth Day (IYD) Celebration and Conference to be held outside Metro Manila.
The 12th IYD, organized by the United Nations Association of the Philippines and United Nations Youth Associations of the Philippines, is scheduled on August 2-7, 2011 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, Iloilo City.
The event is a five-day conference aimed at “mobilizing young people to take concrete actions to end poverty by 2015 as prescribed by the United Nations and the Philippines as signatory to the Millennium Development Goals Campaign.” This year’s IYD focuses on the impact of volunteerism in achieving the MDGs.
Expected participants include local youth leaders from student councils, NGOs, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation, and other foreign youth leaders from more than 15 countries. The conference aims to equip the youth leaders by enhancing their skills in project planning, management, monitoring and implementation using the eight Millenium Development Goals.
To mention, the following are the eight MDG’s:
1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2. Achieve universal primary education
3. Promote gender equality and empower women
4. Reduce child mortality
5. Improve maternal health
6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7. Ensure environmental sustainability; and
8. Global partnership for development
